Washington State
Community College
Marietta, Ohio

Institutional Profile: An AQIP-HLC accredited comprehensive community college.   Washington State Community College is a multi-campus institution.  Formerly Washington Technical College.

Role held, total service, 3 years.

  • Dean of Arts and Sciences – Reported to the Chief Academic Officer
  • Adjunct Instructor of Sociology and Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy

I led the Arts and Sciences Division which encompassed three academic departments:   Liberal Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Service Programs, and Math,
Science, and Engineering Transfer.  I supervised more than 125 full- and part-time faculty and managed a budget exceeding $3 million.  Because Washington State’s structure did not include a Dean of Students, I was also responsible for all student affairs issues within the Division of Arts and Sciences.  I have extensive experience working with Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO), and dual enrollment programs with area high schools and career centers and providing academic services to the Morgan Learning Center, an extended learning center for WSCC.

I served on the Enrollment Management Team and worked extensively with all areas of the student
services division. I was involved in institutional regional accreditation (AQIP), experienced in developing new programs and majors approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education  and the Higher Learning Commission, program
review, Adult Basic Literacy and Education (ABLE), and curriculum development.  I have managed a wide range of human resources and administrative functions including hiring, terminations, discipline, performance evaluations, mentoring, counseling, and performance improvement. I am experienced working with TRiO programs including Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, and Project Lead the Way.

       Select Significant Leadership Accomplishments:
  • Led the Math Redesign Initiative for developmental mathematics education using the Emporium Model and funded through a competitive national grant from The National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • Served as the campus leader for the STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math/Medicine) Equity Pipeline Project funded through a competitive national grant from the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity (NAPE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).  The purpose was to increase enrollment and success for women and girls in STEMM careers.
  • Served on the statewide STEMM Equity team which included only five selected representatives from Ohio.  In this capacity, participated in national dialog on increasing enrollment in STEMM careers for women and girls, traveled to Washington, D.C. and met with US Senators to advocate for STEMM Equity.  As a result, I was selected to participate in the national conference on STEMM Equity.
  • Led the academic quarters to semesters transition for the Division of Arts and Sciences which resulted in the conversion and redesign of more than 600 courses, redevelopment of all curricula within the division, and achieving subsequent state-level approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission.
  • Developed new fine arts programs with the introduction of a theatre and music program and the expansion of the studio arts program.  The result was the Washington State Chorale and the Washington State Players.
  • Led the WSCC and Adult Basic Literacy and Education (ABLE) partnership to create no cost solutions for students accessing higher education but placing at preparedness levels below developmental education.  This also included a pathway to articulate ABLE students into college.
