Leadership Style

Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy is characterized by values I hold as important - mutual respect, excellence, diversity, service, honesty, hard work, and a healthy sense of humor - and the lessons I learned as a child growing up in rural Appalachia – to treat everyone with respect and how you would want to be treated. Consensus building, careful assessment and responsiveness to needs, and tough-minded logic based upon research, data, and common sense shape my leadership style. My philosophy includes the need to be adaptable and observant to the style of leadership necessary in each situation. I believe attention to shared values and cultural influences are also key to effective leadership.   While it is important to remain empathetic and warm, it is also important to be confident and decisive yet open to new perspectives, to share and embrace a vision for the future, learn from our past, and foster a climate based upon the need for continuous quality improvement.  As a leader, I enjoy empowering others in the team to reach their maximum potential and recognize their hard work and effort.  I embrace diversity as an important contributor to effective leadership and a means to making informed decisions.  I am often described as a visionary leader … a charismatic leader … an inspirational leader … a leader others want to follow … and a go-getter that enjoys getting the job done.

Dedication and Leadership Style

I am dedicated to an inclusive, enthusiastic, transformational, and dynamic leadership style as a means of nurturing lifelong learning and a commitment to the institutional mission.  My focus is to foster a decisive outcomes-based, data-driven decision making approach combined with healthy dose of common sense. I embrace continuous quality improvement and a customer/learner-centered approach to organizational operations. I encourage a positive attitude, successful partnerships, effective collaborations, and empowering teams through mutual respect and a welcoming, enjoyable work climate that values diverse perspectives, multiple voices, and a wide range of points of view.
